Chapter 19: Rouen, Normandy

August 1064 AD

Something sent a frission of heat swept along Edric's brow, the sensation of someone watching him.  He looked up to find the green-eyed woman woman, Avicia's nemesis, stood at the summit on the steps.  She stared down her narrow nose at him as she would a dung hill.  Then her mouth widened in a poor imitation of a smile.  She raised her hand and pointed across the bailey.

Edric turned, his stomach tied in knots.  Across the yard, Avicia had emerged from the mews.  Now she stood in the fearsome grip of a burly man with dark eyes, robed in priestly garb.  The brute shook her, his face purple with rage.  It was Odo, the Bishop de Bayeux.

Edric rushed toward them.  Even at a distance, he heard the man sputter, "So it's true, the rumors of you, and your lover!  Did you rendezvous with him just now in this secret place?  Let me not hear the lie on your lips, deceitful, adulterous whore!"
